Segmented blenny

Salarias segmentatus is a comb-tooth blenny from shallow coral reefs and rubble zones of the western Pacific, where it perches on rock and grazes algal turf. Its mottled cryptic body, blunt head and large eyes give it a characteristic expressive look, and it darts between hiding holes with jerky, perching movements. Peaceful toward most tankmates, it is reef-safe and will not bother corals or invertebrates, though it can squabble with other algae-grazing blennies, so keep only one per tank unless the aquarium is very large. It needs an established reef or live-rock system with abundant natural algae film; in a clean tank it must be supplemented with dried marine algae (nori), spirulina and prepared herbivore foods to prevent starvation. Provide stable reef salinity, alkalinity and temperature, plus plenty of caves and ledges for security.
