Axilspot hogfish
The axilspot hogfish is a wrasse (family Labridae) from the Indo-Pacific, found on coral reefs and drop-offs. Adults are white to pinkish at the front and dark brown at the rear, with a dark spot near the pectoral fin base, while juveniles are dark with scattered white spots and behave as cleaners. It is a bold, active fish that can be aggressive toward smaller or more timid tankmates but coexists with robust species. It is generally kept singly. A large aquarium with abundant live rock provides foraging space and hiding places. It is a carnivore that hunts small crustaceans and other invertebrates, so it is not safe with ornamental shrimp, small crabs, or snails, though it does not harm corals. It readily accepts meaty frozen foods such as mysis and chopped seafood. Its hardiness makes it a good choice for fish-focused marine keepers with adequate space.
