Regal angelfish

The regal angelfish is a strikingly patterned marine angelfish (family Pomacanthidae) from the Indo-Pacific. It has bold alternating orange and white vertical bands outlined in blue, with a blue and yellow tail, making it one of the most recognizable reef fish. It is a somewhat shy, semi-aggressive fish that establishes a territory and can be timid when first introduced. It is usually kept singly, as pairs and multiples tend to quarrel unless the aquarium is very large. It requires a large, mature reef with abundant live rock providing grazing surfaces and hiding places. It is an omnivore that in the wild feeds heavily on sponges and tunicates, which makes it notoriously difficult to acclimate to prepared foods; specimens from the right region and offered a varied diet including sponge-based foods fare best. It has a reputation as a challenging angelfish.
