Lyretail anthias

The lyretail anthias, or sea goldie, is a planktivorous reef fish in the family Serranidae, widespread in the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea. It forms large shoals over coral outcrops on reef slopes. Females are orange, while dominant males are more magenta to purplish with an elongated third dorsal spine and a lyre-shaped tail. Anthias are protogynous, meaning a female can change into a male when the dominant male is lost. It is peaceful and shoaling, best kept as one male with several females in a mature reef aquarium with strong flow and plenty of rock. As a planktivore it needs several small feedings daily of enriched mysis, brine, and prepared foods to thrive. A secure lid is important. Because of its demanding feeding schedule, it suits intermediate keepers.
