Blackbar filefish
The blackbar filefish (Pervagor janthinosoma) is a marine fish of the family Monacanthidae, native to reefs of the Indo-Pacific. It has a compact, laterally compressed body with a dark bar behind the head, greenish flanks, and a bright orange-red tail, along with the tough, sandpapery skin and locking dorsal spine typical of filefish. It is a secretive, generally peaceful fish that spends much of its time near cover and can be shy, especially in busy tanks. It is best kept singly and with calm tankmates. A mature aquarium with abundant live rock and hiding places helps it settle and feel secure. Its natural diet includes small invertebrates and algae, so it is not fully reef-safe and may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates. It should be offered varied meaty and vegetable-based frozen foods. It can be slow to adapt to aquarium fare. Captive breeding is not established.
