Randall's jawfish

Opistognathus randalli
French name : Poisson à grande bouche de Randall

Randall's jawfish is a burrowing marine fish in the family Opistognathidae, native to the Indo-Pacific. It has a pale, elongated body with a large head and mouth, and a distinctive yellow-and-red barred first dorsal fin that it flashes during display. It is a shy, largely peaceful fish that spends its time hovering above and darting into a vertical burrow it constructs. It can be kept singly or as a bonded pair, but is easily bullied by boisterous tankmates. A deep sand bed mixed with rubble and shell fragments is essential so it can dig and reinforce its burrow. A tight lid is critical because jawfish are notorious jumpers. It is a carnivore that mouth-broods its eggs and accepts meaty frozen foods such as mysis and finely chopped seafood delivered near its burrow.
