Swales's swissguard basslet
Swales's basslet is a small, secretive reef fish from deep coral slopes and rubble zones of the Western Pacific. Rarely exceeding 8 cm, it is prized for its mottled reddish-brown and cream markings and its shy, retiring nature. In the aquarium it is exceptionally peaceful and reef-safe, spending much of its time darting between rockwork, ledges and caves; a mature tank with abundant live rock and dim, shaded retreats is essential to coax it into the open. It is strictly carnivorous, taking small meaty foods such as mysis, enriched brine shrimp and finely chopped seafood, ideally several small feedings a day. Keep it with calm tankmates that will not outcompete it for food, as boisterous fish leave it hiding and underfed. Stable reef water chemistry and a secure lid, since it may jump, complete its care.
