Longhorn cowfish
The longhorn cowfish is a boxfish in the family Ostraciidae, found on Indo-Pacific reefs and seagrass flats. It is named for the long horn-like spines projecting from its head. Its body is encased in a rigid bony carapace, is roughly box-shaped, and is usually yellow to olive with pale blue spots; it swims with a comical hovering motion using rippling fins. Front and rear spines deter predators. It is slow and peaceful but requires special care: when stressed or dying it can release a toxin that may poison an entire tank. It needs a large, calm aquarium with peaceful tankmates and no fin-nippers. It feeds on small invertebrates and should be offered varied meaty foods; it can be trained to accept prepared diets. Because of its toxin and specialized needs, it suits advanced keepers.
