Bird wrasse

Gomphosus varius
French name : Poisson-oiseau (labre)

The bird wrasse (Gomphosus varius) is a marine reef fish of the family Labridae, native to reefs across the Indo-Pacific. Its most distinctive feature is a greatly elongated, beak-like snout used to probe crevices for prey. Males are deep blue-green, while females and juveniles are lighter with a two-tone brown and white pattern, changing color as they mature and switch sex. This is an active, constantly swimming species that is generally peaceful toward unrelated fish but can harass smaller or slower tankmates. It hunts small crustaceans, worms, snails, and other invertebrates, making it unsuitable for reef tanks with prized mobile invertebrates. A large aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and a tight-fitting lid is essential, as these wrasses are strong jumpers. A sandy substrate and rockwork suit their natural behavior. They accept most meaty frozen and prepared foods once settled. Breeding in home aquaria is not typical.
