Ornate angelfish

The ornate angelfish is a swallowtail angelfish (family Pomacanthidae) from deeper reefs of the western Pacific. It shows marked sexual dimorphism: females are pale with bold orange and black horizontal stripes, while males develop a more subdued pattern with a bluish sheen and elongated tail lobes. Swallowtail angels of the genus Genicanthus are unusual in being peaceful plankton feeders rather than territorial coral grazers, and this species is fully reef-safe. It can be kept singly, as a pair, or as one male with several females. Because it originates from deep water, it appreciates cooler, well-oxygenated conditions, subdued lighting, and a spacious tank with open water for swimming. A planktivore, it feeds in the water column and should be given frequent small feedings of mysis, enriched brine shrimp, and prepared foods. It suits intermediate reef keepers.
