Yellowhead butterflyfish

The yellowhead butterflyfish is a marine fish in the family Chaetodontidae, found on reefs of the western Indian Ocean, including around East Africa, the Seychelles, and the Maldives. Its body is grayish with fine dark scale markings, contrasting with a bright yellow head and yellow fins, and a dark bar through the eye. It feeds on a mix of algae, small invertebrates, and coral polyps in the wild. It requires a large, well-established marine aquarium with plenty of live rock and stable water quality. Because it may nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates, it is not considered reliably reef-safe. A varied diet including meaty foods, marine algae, and specialized butterflyfish preparations is important for long-term health. It is moderately peaceful but should not be crowded with aggressive tankmates. Its dietary needs make it best for experienced marine keepers.
