Threadfin butterflyfish

Chaetodon auriga
French name : Poisson-papillon cocher auriga

The threadfin butterflyfish is a widespread marine species of the family Chaetodontidae, found across the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to Hawaii. It is easily recognized by its white body crossed by fine chevron lines, a yellow rear portion, a black eye band, and a trailing filament extending from the dorsal fin that gives it its name. It is generally a hardy, adaptable butterflyfish that grazes on algae, small invertebrates, coral polyps, and anemones in the wild, making it an omnivore. Adults are often seen alone or in pairs over coral-rich reefs and lagoons. In captivity it is one of the more forgiving butterflyfishes, accepting a varied diet of frozen and prepared foods. It requires a large aquarium with rockwork and hiding spots. Because it may nip sessile invertebrates and corals, it is not fully reef-safe and is best kept in fish-only or carefully chosen systems.
