Randall's shrimpgoby
Randall's shrimpgoby is a marine goby (family Gobiidae) from the Indo-Pacific, famous for its symbiotic partnership with alpheid pistol shrimp. It is whitish with orange-red vertical bars and a large, sail-like dorsal fin marked with a prominent dark spot. The goby is peaceful and pairs its life with a burrowing shrimp: the shrimp digs and maintains the shared burrow while the sharp-eyed goby stands guard. It can be kept singly or as a pair, ideally alongside its shrimp partner. A sand or fine gravel bed with some rubble is needed for the burrow, and a secure lid prevents jumping. It is a carnivore that feeds on small crustaceans and zooplankton, accepting frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and other meaty foods. It is reef-safe and does well in calmer, established systems.
