Mimic surgeonfish

Acanthurus pyroferus
French name : Chirurgien mimétique

The mimic surgeonfish is a tang (family Acanthuridae) from the Indo-Pacific. It earns its name from its juvenile stage, which mimics dwarf angelfish of the genus Centropyge in color and shape, gaining protection by resembling a less-palatable species. Juveniles may be yellow, orange, or brown depending on the angelfish they imitate, while adults turn grey with a dark eye band and orange markings near the gill and tail. It is a fairly peaceful tang but, like all surgeonfish, carries a sharp caudal spine and can quarrel with other tangs. One specimen per tank is usually best. It needs a spacious aquarium with strong water movement and open swimming room, plus live rock for grazing. Primarily a herbivore, it should be offered dried marine algae and vegetable-based foods, supplemented with some meaty items.
