Powder brown tang

The powder brown tang, also called the Japan surgeonfish, is a marine fish of the family Acanthuridae, native to the western Pacific around Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. It has a dark brown body, a black face with a white band near the mouth, and bright yellow, blue and orange highlights on the fins and tail base, along with the sharp caudal spine typical of tangs. It is an active, semi-aggressive fish that can be territorial toward other surgeonfish, and is often kept as the sole tang in a system. It needs a spacious tank with strong flow, ample live rock for grazing and pristine water. It is largely herbivorous, requiring marine algae and vegetable-based foods with some meaty supplements. It can be somewhat delicate and prone to disease if stressed or poorly acclimated. Reef-safe with corals, it suits experienced marine aquarists able to provide the space and stability it needs.
