Purple tang

Zebrasoma xanthurum
French name : Chirurgien à queue jaune (pourpre)

The purple tang is a marine surgeonfish of the family Acanthuridae, native to the Red Sea and adjacent parts of the western Indian Ocean. It has a vivid, uniform purple body with fine dark streaking on the head and a bright yellow tail, plus the sharp caudal spine characteristic of tangs. It is an active, territorial fish that can be aggressive, particularly toward other tangs and yellow or similarly shaped fish, so tankmate choices and introduction order matter. It needs a large tank with strong flow, high water quality and plenty of live rock for grazing and refuge. It is primarily herbivorous, requiring abundant marine algae and vegetable-based foods with occasional meaty supplements. Hardier than some tangs once established, it is nonetheless best for experienced keepers who can manage its aggression. Its brilliant color makes it one of the most prized and valuable reef surgeonfish.
