Fahaka puffer

The fahaka puffer is a large freshwater pufferfish of the family Tetraodontidae, native to the Nile and several other major river systems of Africa. It has a tan to olive body marked with dark stripes and a pale belly, and it can inflate dramatically when threatened. It is a highly aggressive, intelligent, and strictly solitary fish that will attack tankmates and even its own kind, so it must be housed alone. It roams actively and recognizes its keeper, showing considerable personality. A large tank with robust filtration and open space is required for a single adult. Its diet must include hard-shelled foods such as snails, crustaceans, and mussels to wear down its continuously growing beak; otherwise dental overgrowth becomes a serious problem. It is essentially not bred in home aquaria and is a fish for dedicated keepers.
