Blue gularis killifish

Fundulopanchax sjostedti, the blue gularis, is a large and colourful killifish from the coastal lowlands of Nigeria and Cameroon in West Africa, where it lives in slow, soft, tannin-stained forest waters and swampy pools. Males reach around 12 to 13 cm and show striking blue-green flanks, red markings and a lyre-shaped tail, while females are plainer. It is a semi-aggressive predator, so males are best kept singly or one male with several females in a well-planted, dimly lit tank of at least 110 litres with a tight lid, as it jumps. Provide soft, acidic water at 22 to 26 degrees, pH 5.5 to 7.0 and low hardness. Feed a carnivorous diet of live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and small insects. A non-annual species that appreciates a peat or leaf-litter substrate for spawning.
