African red-eyed tetra

The African red-eyed tetra is a characin (family Alestidae) from coastal rivers of western Nigeria, notably the Niger delta region. It is larger and more robust than many tetras, with a silvery body, a golden sheen, a bright red upper eye, and dark markings on the anal and tail fins. It is an active, peaceful shoaling fish that should be kept in groups; a school of six or more reduces skittishness and shows off its constant swimming. Because of its size and activity, it needs a long, spacious aquarium with open swimming room and a secure lid. It is an omnivore that accepts flakes, pellets, and frozen foods, but tends to nibble soft plants. Robust, similarly sized tankmates are ideal, as very small fish may be viewed as food. Its hardiness makes it suitable for keepers ready to provide adequate space.
