Zebra pleco (L46)
The zebra pleco (L46) is a small suckermouth catfish of the family Loricariidae, endemic to Brazil. It is found only in a restricted stretch of the Rio Xingu, a clear, fast-flowing tributary of the Amazon. Its striking pattern of bold black-and-white horizontal stripes made it one of the most sought-after ornamental catfish and led to heavy collection pressure; wild export is now tightly restricted. Unlike many plecos, this species is a modest, non-territorial cave-dweller that stays small and does not rasp on wood or glass for algae. It is generally peaceful but males can be quarrelsome over spawning caves. It appreciates the company of its own kind and does well in small groups where several caves are provided. Care requires warm, well-oxygenated, very clean water with strong flow, mimicking its rocky river home. A dim tank with smooth stones and narrow caves suits it best. It is primarily carnivorous, taking sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp rather than vegetables. Captive breeding is well established and is now the main source of specimens; males guard eggs inside caves.
