Steel-blue killifish

The steel-blue killifish is a colorful freshwater killifish in the family Nothobranchiidae, native to streams and pools of West Africa, particularly Nigeria and Cameroon. Males are brilliant blue-green with rows of red spots and yellow or red fin margins, while females are plain brownish, and numerous regional color forms exist. It is a relatively hardy killifish that can be kept as a pair or as one male with several females; males can be aggressive toward each other. A well-planted tank with subdued lighting, gentle filtration, and a tight lid suits this species, as it may jump. It is a carnivore favoring live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Unlike annual killifish, it is a plant-spawner whose eggs can be incubated in water, making it one of the more approachable killifish for beginners to breed.
