Reedfish
The reedfish, or ropefish, is an elongated, eel-like freshwater fish in the ancient family Polypteridae, native to West and Central Africa. It has a snake-like brown-green body covered in armored ganoid scales, small fins, and paired lungs that let it breathe atmospheric air. It is a peaceful, largely nocturnal fish that becomes social in groups, often resting piled together among cover. It can be kept singly or in a group and mixes with fish too large to be swallowed. Because it is a determined escape artist, a completely sealed lid is essential. It appreciates a soft substrate, dense planting, driftwood, and dim lighting. It is a carnivore that hunts by smell, taking worms, shrimp, and other meaty frozen or live foods, usually after dark. Small tankmates may be eaten, so companions should be peaceful and of appropriate size.
