Vietnamese white cloud mountain minnow
Tanichthys micagemmae is a tiny, subtropical cyprinid from clear, cool, slow-flowing streams of the Bến Hải River basin in central Vietnam, a close relative of the classic white cloud mountain minnow. Reaching only about 3 centimetres, it shows a bright silvery-white lateral stripe and reddish fins, hence the name meaning sparkling gem. It is an extremely peaceful, hardy shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of eight or more to feel secure and display its best colour and constant activity. Provide gentle flow, fine planting and cooler water, from 18 to 25 Celsius, in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral conditions; it dislikes prolonged warmth. An easy omnivore, it takes small flakes, micro-pellets and frozen foods. Its calm temperament, undemanding care and tolerance of unheated tanks make it an excellent beginner and nano-aquarium species.
