Annie's neon blue goby

Stiphodon annieae is a small amphidromous freshwater goby from clear, fast-flowing forest streams in northern Sumatra. Dominant males are spectacular, showing an electric neon-blue lateral band over a dark body, while females and subordinate fish are more cryptic. It is a peaceful, bottom-dwelling grazer best suited to a mature, well-oxygenated aquarium with strong flow, smooth rocks and stones coated in green biofilm and diatoms, which form the bulk of its natural diet. Keep it in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at 22 to 26 Celsius. Males can be mildly territorial over grazing rocks, so provide open hardscape and keep small groups. Because it feeds almost exclusively on aufwuchs, it should only be added to established tanks and supplemented with algae-based foods; starvation in bare setups is the main cause of loss.
