Gulf saratoga

The Gulf saratoga is a primitive, bony-tongued predator from the rivers, billabongs and floodplain lagoons of northern Australia and New Guinea. It is a large, powerful surface-oriented fish reaching around 75 cm, with big cycloid scales and an upturned mouth built for taking prey at the waterline. This is an advanced-only species requiring a very large aquarium with a tightly secured lid, as it is a determined jumper. Water should be warm, soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral. Highly territorial and aggressive toward its own kind, it is usually kept alone or with large, fast tankmates that cannot be swallowed. A strict carnivore, it takes insects, fish, crustaceans, prawns and pellet foods. Excellent filtration and pristine water are essential given its size and heavy waste output.
