Lake Kutubu rainbowfish

The Lake Kutubu rainbowfish is a rainbowfish of the family Melanotaeniidae, endemic to Lake Kutubu and its outflow in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Mature fish are a stunning turquoise to sky-blue above with a paler belly, the color deepening with age and dominance, and males develop a fuller body profile. It is a peaceful, active shoaling fish that should be kept in a group of six or more, where males display their best color competing for females. A spacious aquarium with open swimming room, some planting and clean, well-oxygenated, neutral to slightly alkaline water suits it. It is an omnivore that takes flake, micro-pellets and small live or frozen foods, and benefits from a varied diet to maintain its blue coloration. It is an egg-scatterer that deposits sticky eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops over several days, with no parental care.
