Dwarf neon rainbowfish

Melanotaenia praecox
French name : Arc-en-ciel néon (praecox)

The dwarf neon rainbowfish is a small, colorful rainbowfish of the family Melanotaeniidae, endemic to the Mamberamo River system in West Papua, New Guinea. It has a deep, compressed body shining with electric blue, with males showing bright red fins and females more subdued orange-tinted fins. It is a peaceful, active shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more, where males intensify their color while displaying. It occupies the middle and upper water levels and is constantly on the move. A spacious, well-planted tank with open swimming areas and good filtration suits it. It accepts flakes, small pellets, and live or frozen foods, which enhance coloration. It is an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and is bred readily by hobbyists.
