Boeseman's rainbowfish

Boeseman's rainbowfish is a colorful member of the family Melanotaeniidae, native to the Ajamaru Lakes region of the Vogelkop Peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia. Mature males show a striking two-tone body, bluish-gray at the front grading into orange-red at the rear, while females are more silvery. It is an active, peaceful shoaling fish that should be kept in groups; males display their best colors when competing for the attention of females. Its constant swimming makes it a lively midwater and upper-tank occupant. It thrives in a spacious, well-planted aquarium with open swimming areas, neutral to slightly alkaline water, and good current. It accepts a wide range of foods and colors up best on a varied diet. Egg-scattering breeding occurs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with eggs hatching over one to two weeks.
