Odessa barb

Pethia padamya
French name : Barbus odessa

The Odessa barb is a freshwater cyprinid (family Cyprinidae) native to Myanmar. Males are especially striking, displaying a broad iridescent red band along the flank over a silvery body flecked with dark spots, while females are plainer and more golden. The species was long known in the hobby before its wild origin was formally described. It is an active, peaceful shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more to reduce fin-nipping and encourage natural behaviour and color. Males intensify their coloration when competing for females. A spacious planted tank with open swimming areas and gentle current suits it well. An omnivore, it accepts flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods, and grazes some algae. Hardy and adaptable, it makes an excellent community fish and can breed among fine-leaved plants.
