Macculloch's rainbowfish
Macculloch's rainbowfish is a small, hardy and peaceful species from the coastal creeks, swamps and lagoons of northern Queensland, Australia. Reaching only about seven centimetres, it is an excellent, undemanding rainbowfish for community aquariums and a good choice for beginners. The body is silvery to olive with rows of fine reddish-brown spots forming horizontal lines, and orange-red fins that brighten as males display. It is a shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of six or more, ideally with several males so colour rivalry is spread out. Pair it with other small rainbows, rasboras or peaceful tetras. It tolerates a range of conditions but does best in warm, slightly acidic to neutral, soft to moderately hard water with plants and open swimming space. Feed a varied omnivorous diet of flakes, micropellets and small live or frozen foods.
