Glass catfish
Kryptopterus bicirrhis, the glass catfish, is a member of the family Siluridae, native to rivers of Southeast Asia. It is famous for its near-total transparency: the body is glass-clear, showing the spine and a silvery swim bladder, with a pair of long barbels extending from the snout. It is a peaceful, sociable fish that must be kept in a shoal of at least six, as isolated individuals become stressed and decline. It hovers mid-water at a slight tail-down angle in gentle current. It needs a mature, well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting, clean water, and moderate flow, and is best housed with small, calm tankmates. An omnivore leaning carnivorous, it prefers small live and frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp, and may accept fine prepared foods. It is sensitive to poor water quality, so stable conditions are important.
About the name : Sold as Kryptopterus bicirrhis, the label kept here — but the glass catfish of the trade is in fact Kryptopterus vitreolus, only described in 2013. The true K. bicirrhis is a different, much larger species (up to 15 cm) that is hardly ever exported. The care details on this page describe the fish you actually buy.
