Waroo cichlid

The waroo, or triangle cichlid, is a large South American cichlid of the family Cichlidae, native to the Amazon River basin. It has a tall, disc-shaped body that is grayish to brown with a dark triangular marking on the flank, and juveniles are more mottled before developing the adult pattern. It is a largely herbivorous omnivore that feeds heavily on plant matter, fruit, and detritus in the wild, and it will eat soft aquarium plants. It is a peaceful, somewhat shy relative of the discus that appreciates similar conditions. It needs a large, warm aquarium with soft, acidic water, driftwood, and good filtration to handle its plant-rich diet and resulting waste. Diet should emphasize vegetable matter alongside pellets and some meaty foods. It is best kept in a group and with calm tankmates, and it can be skittish, so a quiet location and secure surroundings help it settle.
