Discus

The discus is a majestic South American cichlid of the family Cichlidae, native to slow-moving tributaries of the Amazon basin. It has a round, laterally compressed, disc-shaped body and comes in a huge range of wild and captive colors, from brown and blue wild forms to brilliant reds, blues, and patterned strains. It is a peaceful but shy schooling cichlid that does best in a group, where a natural hierarchy forms. It should be kept with calm, warm-water tankmates that will not outcompete it for food. Discus demand warm, soft, acidic water and pristine conditions, making them one of the more challenging aquarium fish. A tall, planted tank with driftwood suits them. Omnivorous, they take specialized foods, bloodworms, and beefheart-based preparations. They are famous for spawning on vertical surfaces, with fry feeding on mucus secreted by both parents.
