Chalk bass
The chalk bass is a small sea bass in the family Serranidae, native to the western Atlantic and Caribbean. It has an orange to reddish-brown body overlaid with iridescent blue lines and spots along the flanks, giving it subtle but attractive coloration. Unlike many basses it is relatively peaceful and, unusually, can be kept in groups if introduced together, where they shoal loosely. It is hardy and adapts well to aquarium life. It is well suited to reef and fish-only aquariums with rockwork for shelter and a secure lid, as it may jump when startled. It is a hardy carnivore that eagerly takes meaty foods such as mysis and chopped seafood, though it may eat very small shrimp or fish. Its durability and calm nature make it a good choice for newer marine keepers.
