Blackcap basslet
The blackcap basslet (Gramma melacara) is a small marine fish of the family Grammatidae, native to deep reef walls and caves of the Caribbean. It has a vivid magenta-purple body topped by a contrasting black cap running from the snout over the top of the head and along the dorsal fin, making it a prized reef aquarium species. It is territorial toward its own kind and similar cave-dwelling fish but otherwise peaceful in a community. It typically claims a cave or overhang and orients its body to the nearest surface, often swimming upside down under ledges. A reef aquarium with plenty of rockwork, caves, and moderate lighting suits its retiring nature. It is a hardy carnivore that readily accepts mysis, brine shrimp, and other small meaty frozen foods. Reef-safe with corals and most invertebrates. It has been bred in captivity, guarding eggs in a chosen crevice.
