Vampire pleco (L240)

The vampire pleco (L240) is a striking loricariid catfish from the fast-flowing Rio Tocantins in Brazil, named for the two prominent fang-like teeth in its upper jaw. Its dark body is peppered with pale spots, giving rise to the "galaxias" name. Unlike most plecos, it is largely carnivorous, favouring meaty foods such as frozen bloodworms, mussel, prawn and sinking pellets over vegetable matter, though it will graze occasionally. It appreciates warm, well-oxygenated water with strong current and clean substrate. Provide caves and driftwood for territory and daytime shelter, as it is nocturnal and can be territorial toward other bottom dwellers. Best kept singly or with ample space between individuals. Soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water suits it, and pristine conditions with good flow help prevent disease.
