Black neon tetra

Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi
French name : Tétra tête-noire

The black neon tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) is a small freshwater characin of the family Characidae, native to the Paraguay River basin in southern Brazil. It has a silvery body marked with a bold horizontal black band bordered above by a bright greenish-white iridescent stripe, and a distinctive red upper eye. Despite the similar name, it is a different species from the common neon tetra. It is a peaceful, hardy shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of at least six to feel secure and display its best color. It coexists well with other small, calm community fish. A well-planted aquarium with soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic water and subdued lighting brings out its coloration. It is an omnivore that accepts flakes, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods. Its adaptability and easy diet make it a good choice for beginners. It can be bred in soft, dim conditions among fine-leaved plants.
