Bleeding heart tetra

The bleeding heart tetra (Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma) is a freshwater characin of the family Characidae, native to the upper Amazon Basin in Peru and Colombia. It has a tall, pinkish-silver body marked by a distinctive small red spot on each flank over the heart region, from which it takes its name. Males develop a long, sickle-shaped dorsal fin. It is a peaceful shoaling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more to reduce fin-nipping and show natural behavior. It suits a calm community of similarly sized fish. A well-planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water, subdued lighting, and some open swimming space displays it best. It is an omnivore accepting flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods. Hardy once established, though sensitive to poor water quality. It is considered difficult to breed compared with many tetras, requiring very soft, acidic conditions.
