Rummynose tetra

The rummynose tetra is a slender characin of the family Characidae, native to the lower Amazon and Rio Negro basins in Brazil. It is prized for its striking pattern: a deep red to crimson head, a silvery body, and a bold black-and-white striped tail. This particular species (often sold as the true or Brilliant rummynose) is noted for the intensity of its red nose. It is a peaceful, highly social fish that forms exceptionally tight schools, making it a favorite for aquascaped tanks. It must be kept in groups of at least eight, and larger shoals produce the most impressive synchronized swimming. The red coloration also acts as a sensitive indicator of water quality. It needs stable, clean, soft and slightly acidic water, as it is sensitive to poor conditions. A planted tank with open swimming space and peaceful tankmates is ideal. It accepts small flakes and frozen foods. Breeding requires very soft, acidic water and is considered moderately difficult.
