Redhump eartheater
The redhump eartheater is a South American cichlid (family Cichlidae) from river systems of Colombia and nearby regions. Mature males develop a pronounced fatty hump on the head and iridescent red, orange, and blue-green coloration, while females stay smaller and less ornamented. It is a relatively peaceful cichlid for its group, though it becomes territorial when breeding. It can be kept singly, as a pair, or in a group with adequate space, and mixes with other calm South American fish. As a true eartheater it sifts mouthfuls of sand for food, so a soft sandy substrate is important to allow this natural behavior and protect its mouth. It is an omnivore that accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods, and small live foods. It is a maternal mouthbrooder, with the female incubating eggs and fry in her mouth.
