Checkerboard cichlid

The checkerboard cichlid is an elegant, slender dwarf cichlid from the soft, acidic blackwaters of the Rio Negro and Orinoco basins. It takes its name from the double row of dark checkerboard blotches along its flanks; mature males develop a striking lyre-shaped tail with red and blue filaments. Peaceful and rather shy, it is well suited to a quiet blackwater community with small tetras and other gentle species, but it is easily outcompeted by boisterous fish. This is a demanding species best reserved for experienced aquarists: it requires very soft, acidic, warm and spotlessly clean water, and successful breeding often depends on near mineral-free conditions. Aquascape with leaf litter, driftwood, fine sand and shaded areas. Feed small live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia and micro-worms, as it often refuses dry foods.
