Umbrella dwarf cichlid

The umbrella dwarf cichlid is a small South American cichlid of the family Cichlidae, native to the Paraguay and Parana river systems and the Pantanal region. Males show soft blue-and-yellow coloration with a squared tail, while females become bright yellow, especially when tending eggs. It is an omnivore that feeds on small invertebrates, larvae, and organic matter sifted from the substrate. It is one of the more temperate-tolerant Apistogramma, coming from waters that can be cooler than typical tropical tanks. It is peaceful and well suited to planted community aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water, gentle flow, and plenty of caves or leaf litter for spawning sites. It accepts small frozen and live foods and quality prepared foods. It is a cave-spawner in which the female guards the eggs and fry while the male defends the wider territory, making it a rewarding, relatively easy dwarf cichlid.
