Rudd

The rudd is a robust European cyprinid found in still and slow-flowing waters rich in vegetation, easily recognised by its golden-bronze flanks and bright red-orange fins. It is a coldwater, unheated-aquarium or pond species that tolerates a wide temperature swing, from near-freezing winters to warm summers, and prefers neutral to alkaline, moderately hard water. A gregarious shoaling fish, it should be kept in groups of six or more and does best in large tanks or garden ponds because adults reach around 40 cm. It is peaceful toward other coldwater species of similar size but will eat very small fish. An opportunistic omnivore, it grazes on soft plants, algae, insect larvae, small crustaceans and flake or pellet foods. Provide strong filtration, plenty of open swimming space and cool, well-oxygenated water.
