Spilonotus hap cichlid

Protomelas spilonotus
French name : Protomelas spilonotus

Protomelas spilonotus is a large haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. Dominant males develop a striking blue head and body with contrasting patterning, while females and subordinate males are silvery with darker blotches, giving the species its varied trade forms. It is a moderately aggressive, polygamous mouthbrooder that requires ample space and is best kept with one male to several females among other robust Malawi haps and mbuna of similar size. A large aquarium of several hundred liters with hard, alkaline water, a sandy substrate, and rocky structures is recommended. It is an omnivore that feeds on invertebrates and plant matter in the wild; a varied diet of quality cichlid pellets and frozen foods suits it. Females incubate eggs in the mouth, a hallmark of Malawi cichlids.
