Blunthead cichlid
Tropheus moorii is a rock-dwelling cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. It has a stocky, high-backed body and a blunt head, and occurs in dozens of geographic color morphs, ranging from black with a broad red, orange, or yellow band to speckled and rainbow patterns. This species grazes biofilm and algae from rocks and is highly territorial and aggressive, particularly toward its own kind. It is best kept in a large colony to spread aggression rather than in small groups where dominant fish bully others. Care demands hard, alkaline water, plenty of rockwork, and a diet high in vegetable matter; excess protein causes fatal bloat. It is a maternal mouthbrooder, the female carrying eggs and fry in her mouth for several weeks. Because of its diet, temperament, and sensitivity, it suits experienced keepers.
