Five-bar cichlid

Neolamprologus tretocephalus
French name : Tretocephalus

Neolamprologus tretocephalus, the five-bar cichlid, is a handsome blue-grey Tanganyikan species crossed by five bold black vertical bands, superficially resembling the larger Cyphotilapia frontosa. Growing to about 15 cm, it inhabits rocky shorelines where it preys on snails, crustaceans and other invertebrates, its strong jaws suited to crushing shells. This is a notably pugnacious, highly territorial fish that becomes intolerant of its own kind and other rock cichlids as it matures, so it is usually kept singly in a large, well-decorated tank with sturdy rockwork. Provide hard, alkaline, warm water with efficient filtration. Feed a varied carnivorous diet of snails, mysis, krill and quality pellets to support its natural crunching behaviour. Best suited to aquarists able to manage its aggression and give it ample defended space.
