Regan's julie

Julidochromis regani, the largest of the julies, commonly reaches 12-13 cm and inhabits rocky and intermediate zones throughout Lake Tanganyika, including the well-known Kipili populations. It has an elongated pike-like body marked by clean horizontal dark stripes on a golden ground. It grazes invertebrates and micro-crustaceans from rock surfaces and shelters in crevices. Like other julies it forms bonded, highly territorial pairs, so keep one pair in a tank of at least 150 litres with abundant piled rock and caves; allow generous space if housing other Tanganyikan cichlids. Water should be hard and alkaline, pH 8-9, temperature 24-27 C, with strong filtration and stability. Feed a carnivorous mix of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, cyclops and quality prepared foods, with occasional vegetable matter. A cave spawner that lays small clutches on rock ceilings and guards fry diligently.
