Zebra obliquidens
Haplochromis obliquidens is an African cichlid from the Lake Victoria region in East Africa, part of the diverse haplochromine species flock. Males are colorful, showing yellow to orange bodies crossed by dark vertical bars, while females are typically drabber and more silvery. It is a moderately aggressive, active cichlid, with males defending territory and displaying vigorously to females, especially when breeding. It does well in a tank with rockwork and open areas, hard alkaline water suiting its rift-region origins, and a mixed diet emphasizing vegetable matter along with meaty supplements. Keeping one male with several females helps reduce harassment. It is a maternal mouthbrooder that breeds readily in aquaria. Note that the name is applied somewhat loosely in the trade to several Victorian haplochromines, so stock identity can vary. It suits intermediate cichlid keepers.
