Chinese snakehead

The Chinese snakehead is a robust, subtropical predator from streams and ponds of southern China and Taiwan, reaching about 30 cm. Uniquely among snakeheads it lacks pelvic fins, and displays attractive blue-flecked flanks and rows of dark ocelli. As an air-breather it must reach the surface for atmospheric oxygen, so leave an air gap beneath a heavy, secured lid, since it is a powerful jumper and escape artist. Coming from cooler waters, it tolerates and benefits from a seasonal temperature drop and does not require tropical heat year-round. It is territorial and predatory, best kept singly or as an established pair in a spacious, well-filtered tank with hiding spots and robust plants. Feed meaty carnivore foods: earthworms, prawn, mussel and fish pieces; wean off live feeders to avoid disease. An intermediate-level fish.
