Hillstream loach

The hillstream loach is a flattened, disc-shaped fish of the family Balitoridae (Gastromyzontidae), native to fast, cool, highly oxygenated mountain streams of southern China and Southeast Asia. Its low profile and modified fins act as a suction device that lets it cling to smooth rocks against strong current, and its mottled body resembles a small ray or gecko. It is peaceful and can be kept singly or in small groups, though individuals may squabble mildly over grazing territory. This species demands a specialized setup with strong flow, high oxygen, cooler temperatures and smooth stones coated in the biofilm and algae it grazes. It is an omnivore that rasps aufwuchs from surfaces and also takes sinking foods, blanched vegetables and small frozen items. It is not suited to warm, still community tanks, which is the most common cause of failure with this fish.
